The Community Schools department also runs numerous programs through the course of the year in which families can take part together, including festivals at the beginning and end of each year; its Friday Night Lights, Saturday Morning Lights and Bright Lights summer programs; and many programs are offered to families through the Parent Empowerment Center, located in the middle school.
Poughkeepsie Middle School features many athletics and activities for students throughout the year, including the Culture Shock Club, Sister 2 Sister, National Junior Honor Society, Science Olympiad and others. The school boasts 13 modified sports teams in addition to an eSports team.
Not only does the middle school offer an extended-learning time program but in fall 2025 it will be expanding to five days a week.
The Marist College Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) is a dropout prevention and college access program that is funded by the New York State Education Department. It has been sponsored by Marist College since 1990. Marist LPP serves 341 underrepresented students (grades 5-12) in the Poughkeepsie City School District. Marist College LPP is committed to the belief that all students can learn and should have equal access to resources.
Technology is integrated to enhance learning, with resources such as Promethean Boards in classrooms, Chromebooks and laptops issued to students, and resources through Google Classrooms.
Across the district, school buildings are kept safe by security staff, school resource officers, main entrance vestibules that limit access and millions of dollars in security equipment obtained through various grants and investments of district funding.
There are 130 cameras operating across the district, including cameras at every entrance and placed strategically at areas inside and outside of buildings, with a rapid search function for faces or identifying features like a shirt of a specific color. Each building is also equipped with the “Raptor Visitor Management System,” which enables greeters and security staff to instantly screen any visitor for possible security risks using their ID, and is synced with the student information system.
The high and middle schools have metal detectors and bag scanners, and staff has wands to check individuals as they enter.
Students, families and community members are also encouraged to utilize the P3 Campus anonymous reporting platform to notify schools of a potential threat of violence or other issue regarding a building or an individual’s wellbeing.
